Website of the Week: Storyline Online (Gr. K-8)

Storyline Online – Virtual story readers in your classroom!

Storyline Online is an absolutely wonderful literacy resource to get students excited about reading, writing, and the telling of stories. A program of the Screen Actors Guild Foundation, this site contains 24 animated stories on such books as A Bad Case of Strips and Romeow & Drooliet. All of the books are read by celebrities from television and film and most include closed captioning. Once you select a story you are given four different Internet speed options, allowing you to configure the experience to fit your technology situation. Use the “Related…” and “More Activities” buttons to get ideas on how to extend student learning and connect to other topics and content areas.

I discovered this site many years ago when I was working at the elementary level and introduced it to several teachers as a resource to use with their newly acquired SMART Boards. I’m glad to see that the site is still going strong and adding more books and attracting new celebrity readers to the program.

  • Use this site as an easy way to invite “guests” to your reading groups or school book club.
  • If you have IT support, consider challenging your students to create their own Storyline Online using their favorite books and/or recent additions to the school library.
